Dr. Fuller and Dr. Moehle will start our symposium by presenting their working model for COVID and Long COVID pathophysiology. This model has been teased out by discussions, teaching and cases which unite their shared interests in neurology and complex clinical diagnostics. This review has been started as a basic organ system pathophysiology of PASC (post acute sequelae of COVID), and developed from there.

Dr. Fuller's review of the biochemistry of pain and magnesium was the highest ranked lecture of our recent Pain Management conference. Dr. Fuller is a 2009 graduate of NUNM. Her career includes 10 years of work in sports medicine, neurologic disability, and IV therapy. During this time, she has focused on working with individuals with spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and stroke, as well as helping able-bodied individuals become the best athletes possible. She continues to lecture at NUNM on the topics of neurology, pain management, and IV therapy.

Dr. Moehle will be presenting on long-COVID pathophysiology as it relates to GI and endocrine conditions, while laying groundwork for potential treatment approaches. In this presentation she will discuss risk factors, symptom presentation, and relevant research to help inform best clinical practice when it comes to managing patients with long-COVID syndrome.

Dr. Wilson will be discussing the research about why Long Covid patients have so many brain oriented symptoms including a correlation with concussion serum markers in long-covid. Dr. Wilson will lead us through why Long Covid can be considered an immunologic brain injury. She will discuss some pathophysiology and the overlap between long covid and post-concussive syndrome. She will also discuss work-up and treatment approaches for this patient population. She will include a couple clinical cases to learn from.

Dr. Kirstin Wilson is an Naturopathic Doctor and Certified Athletic Trainer with over a decade of experience treating concussions and brain injuries. Her practice focuses on concussions, environmental medicine, EDS/POTS, mast cell issues, orthopedics, and a wide variety of neurological problems. She currently works at Nurture Integrative Health Clinic and Meliora Clinic in Portland, OR.

There’s a complicated relationship between SARS-CoV2 and autoimmune disease. This talk is designed to explore the established association between infection and autoimmunity. We will discuss the relevance as we think about those at risk for future COVID triggered autoimmune disease. We will further explore controversy around mass vaccination and how it may influence future autoimmune risk. We’ll then bridge to the topic of post-COVID syndrome and discuss whether post-COVID is an early stage of autoimmune disease. Finally, we will discuss people who had autoimmunity prior to the pandemic and how immune dysregulation that occurs as a part of autoimmunity can play a role in how someone responds to a SARS-CoV2 infection and vaccinations. The medical literature surrounding COVID continues to grow as does its impact on the population. This talk is designed to bring you up to date on COVID and autoimmunity.

Heather Zwickey got many of us up to speed with COVID during her popular Vaccine Intensive talks. She is a popular speaker in immunology and frequently speaks on topics linking immunology and alternative medicine. She earned a Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbiology from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center with a focus on infectious disease and vaccine development. Dr. Zwickey went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship and teach at Yale University School of Medicine where she worked on immunotherapy for cancer. Dr. Zwickey launched the NUNM Helfgott Research Institute and established the NUNM School of Graduate Studies.

Dr Lundquist has worked in consultation with Heather Zwickey to solve puzzling cases. Since COVID the puzzles have intensified and he has been working with many interesting COVID and long-COVID cases. He will share these with us and also share research and insights relevant. Heather will compliment his talk with a focus on immunology relevant.

Dr. Lundquist has a special interest in integrative and holistic medicine. He is currently the founder and medical director for the Temecula Center for Integrative Medicine. He is a member of the American Holistic Medical Association as well as the Institute of Functional Medicine. He specializes in endocrine disorders especially thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, chronic fatigue, migraine headaches, cardio metabolic disorders and chronic pain. He attended Occidental College in LA where he graduated with a B.A. in Kinesiology and Biology. He received his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Guggenheim previously has helped use tease out the connections between autoimmunity, neurology, and post COVID and through this discussion, Dr. Guggenheim will continue to lead us through emerging research on “long haul COVID symptoms. This talk will look at infections with the sars-cov-2 virus, that can have pluripotent impacts on physiology and contribute to the development of ongoing significant symptomatology. This lecture will specifically focus on the impacts of viral infection on the autonomic nervous system, and evolving hypothesis regarding the impact on chronic immune activation via inappropriate mast cell degranulation, and changes in clotting. We will further cover diagnostic criteria of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, the most common form of post covid dysautonomia, and mast cell activation syndrome, as well as pharmaceutical and integrative therapeutics.

Alena Guggenheim is a 4th generation physician. She is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, at the School of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR. She graduated from NUNM in 2007, then completed her residency in 2009 from the same institution. Dr. Guggenheim specializes in the care of children and adults with chronic pain and joint hypermobility disorders. She enjoys working with patients with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and associated complex symptoms.

Dr. Barber did a preceptorship with Dr. Walker. This took an interesting turn when they decided to publish an article together. The article co-published with Dr. Richard Barrett and Ryan Bradley, has proven popular. Dr. Walker and Dr. Barber will present both the protocol and cases that inspired the article and then they will discuss how any naturopath can turn cases into research articles and thus widen the ND reach. The article we are referring to is “A naturopathic treatment approach for mild and moderate COVID-19: A retrospective chart review” published in the journal of Complementary Therapies in Medicine in 2021. A dynamic review of mild to moderate COVID-19 cases seen in an outpatient, naturopathic, primary care setting will be provided. Patients experienced complete symptom resolution after receiving naturopathic treatment including botanical medicine, probiotics, dietary changes, and oral and IV nutrient therapy. Discussion will cover the stratified treatment protocol provided based on disease severity and risk factors, as well as address patient health outcomes. We will conclude the presentation highlighting takeaways on reporting and publishing from the point-of-care. Different tools developed by Dr. Barber on writing and publishing case reports, case series, and retrospective chart reviews will be shared.

Dr. Walker moved to Portland to attend the National College of Natural Medicine, earning her doctorate in 2007. Dr. Walker completed her residency at Salem Naturopathic Clinic in 2009.She and her husband Brant Walker established Canby Clinic in 2010 as a part-time country clinic.

Dr. Barber has worked in diverse facets of health research for nearly 15 years – from basic science to epidemiology to practice-based research. She has been on the CAse REport (CARE) Steering Committee since 2014 and was co-author of the CARE Explanation and Elaboration (E&E) document, a manual for writing case reports.
