  • The Psychology of Pain and Chronic Health Conditions

    Presenter: Misha Kleronomos, PsyD
    Original Date: November 17, 2018

It has become apparent through research and clinical experience that a person experiencing chronic pain and chronic health conditions are both affected by and being affected by psychological symptoms. We now know that the biopsychosocial connections to a person’s physical and psychological health is important to acknowledge, evaluate, and treat. This means that our treatment of chronic pain and chronic health conditions should take into account all areas of a person’s functioning and how they are interacting.
This lecture will look at those interactions, as well as the psychological and psychosocial effects of chronic health issues, and effects of psychological well-being on chronic conditions. Most importantly, students will learn how to treat people with chronic pain and health conditions with psychological interventions in the most tailored and integrated way.

  • “The Map of the Human System” – Anatomy, Physiology, Diagnosis and Treatment from a Multi-level Perspective

    Presenter: Hilary Farberow-Stuart, ND
    Original Date: November 17, 2018

Investigating root cause of disease takes us much further than the physical body, into the realms of the energetic, emotional, mental, spiritual, and beyond, to nondual awareness. This presentation will teach diagnosis and treatment of physical symptomology within a multi-level system. Through the exploration and understanding of the different levels within the system, a “map” becomes available to the practitioner. Navigation within this “map” allows the practitioner to understand physical symptomology as a representation or expression from other levels within the “map”, providing diagnosis and treatment options from an expanded perspective. This presentation will give an introduction to the structure and content of each level with the system, as well as an overview as to how each level functions in a state of health or manifests disease. This will include some of the latest research in brain science on the physical level, a view of the energetic body, the expression of disease symptoms from the emotional level, and how beliefs and emotions held within the unconscious mind, often as a result of trauma, become manifested physically. The addition of spiritual and nondual awareness to the treatment protocol will be illuminated, as the fields of Energy Psychology and Mindfulness Training join the medical field as accepted and viable methods of treatment. In addition, the Presence of the Practitioner will be discussed and practiced. Case histories and experiential exercises for each level will be included.
Upon completion of Level One, the practitioner will be able to understand the general structure and content of the“map of the human system”, and how to use it as a multi-level tool for diagnosis and treatment. The class will include discussion about specific disease states, case histories, and experiential exercises for the practitioner. This information is relevant and applicable to any practitioner within the medical field, regardless of specialty.

  • How to Reduce Legal Risk and Improve Outcomes by Setting Appropriate Boundaries in Patient Relationships

    Presenter: Roy Huggins, LPC NCC
    Original Date: November 17, 2018

A core tenet of Naturopathic medicine is to provide deep, holistic care for patients that addresses the whole person. As such, NDs frequently develop closer relationships with patients than do their allopathic counterparts. In addition, NDs in Oregon have recently found themselves being more closely integrated into primary care for Oregonians and thus under closer scrutiny from their licensing board. It has become clear that one common cause of complaint to the board involves boundary violations.
In order to help attendees learn how to establish rigorous boundaries with patients, as opposed to either overly ridged or overly porous boundaries, this presentation will show attendees how psychotherapists use professional boundaries as both a tool for maintaining ethical behavior and for improving clinical outcomes along with discussion of the many ways in which this model applies to Naturopathic medical practice. The presentation will also explore the all-important topic of which kinds of patient conditions and which situations typically foster boundary crossings and violations.

  • Neuroinflammation – Mechanisms, Causes, Manifestations

    Presenter: Walter J. Crinnion, ND
    Original Date: November 18, 2018

Neuroinflammation is found in all persons with chronic neurologic diseases as well as those with traumatic brain injury. Glial cell activation results in neuroinflammation, which often manifests in a case history with one or all of the following: cognitive decline, mood disorder, pain. All of these manifestations show up regularly in every clinical practice and have proven to be quite difficult to completely resolve. One of the reasons for this lack of resolution could be due to failure to recognize and specifically treat neuroinflammation.
This presentation will review the mechanisms by which glial cell activation occurs. All of the common causes of glial activation will be covered including endotoxicity, traumatic brain injury, oxidative stress and environmental pollutants. The pivotal role of glutathione in preventing neuroinflammation from becoming chronic will also be presented.

  • Treatment to Reduce Neuroinflammation

    Presenters: Walter J. Crinnion, ND
    Original Date: November 18, 2018

Neuroinflammation is present undetected in many of our patients resulting in cognitive decline, mood disorder, chronic pain and a variety of chronic neurologic diseases. Even though neuroinflammation causes a great deal of morbidity, surprisingly there are a vast number of naturopathic modalities that have proven exceptionally effective at preventing and reversing neuroinflammation.
This presentation will go through many of the the common causes of neuroinflammation to show the steps that can be take to reverse this process. Emphasis will be placed on proper glutathione repletion, dietary components, nutrients, and botanical agents. The important role of hormone in preventing and reversing neuroinflammation will be discussed. Lifestyle steps, including exercise, yoga and meditation have also proven useful in preventing and reducing neuroinflammation.

  • The Healing Power of Mindfulness in Clinical Practice

    Presenter: Paul Epstein, ND
    Original Date: November 18, 2018

This presentation will provide an in-depth understanding of Mindfulness (what it is and how it is practiced), its benefits in health, wellness and healing (for patient, doctor and the therapeutic relationship) and provide specific direction for its application and integration into Naturopathic Clinical Care. We’ll discuss how to integrate Mindfulness into clinical practice to create new neural pathways, affect genetic expression and enhance cellular and self-adaptation to life, stress and trauma. We will discuss the importance of the Therapeutic Relationship as an integral component of a patient’s healing process and use Mindfulness and compassion as a means to cultivate unconditional presence in the practitioner as a means of enhancing the therapeutic relationship and interpersonal neurobiology. This will be a practical and experiential session that will explore the benefits of becoming a Mindful Practitioner and provide instruction on how to integrate and apply Mindfulness in client treatment to improve clinical results and outcome.
