    The one common denominator among naturopathic physicians is an understanding that food is key to health and healing. Diet is a foundational aspect of health. There are many competing ideas regarding the best way to eat. A search of the traditional approaches to diet among naturopathic physicians through time is instructive in understanding how one should eat to regain and maintain health. Through such an effort can we gain an understanding of the best approach to healthy eating?     Prescribing the Gluten-Free Diet (GFD) has supplied a powerful clinical dietary modality for the past decade for treatment of symptoms in a variety of systems. “Gluten” and other wheat proteins are complex culprits in symptomatic pictures in patients with celiac disease, other autoimmune diagnoses and non-celiac gluten-sensitivity. Gluten-free diets now extend beyond wheat-free and on occasion delve into grain-free diets. We will discuss which GFD is appropriate to recommend and the issue of the calories and nutrition of grains on which humans have been dependent for millennia.
