  • Pediatric Dermatology:  Pearls and Pitfalls

    Dr. MaryK Geyer and Dr. Zeenia Junkeer will be co-presenting on a practical array of pearls and pitfalls in pediatric dermatological evaluation and treatment.

    Dr. Geyer, through illustrations and case discussion, she will explore effective diagnostic and treatment strategies; with emphasis on similarly presenting and commonly misdiagnosed conditions.  The exploration of treatment strategies will include a discussion of naturopathic and pharmacological treatment options; including choice of delivery method, strength, frequency and length of therapy, and choosing amounts for prescriptive agents.  In addition, the high yield pharmacy portion will include special emphasis on pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics as they affect children’s higher body surface to volume ratio.  

    Dr. Junkeer will showcase dermatological skin presentations in darker pigmented skin tones. She will present differential diagnosis strategies of skin conditions in darker skinned patients, as well as differences in cutaneous structure and function. She will discuss concerns with lightening of skin secondary to medication use, and also updates in the treatment of keloids/hypertrophic scars.

    Childhood epilepsy remains one of the most common and challenging neurologic disorders in early life. Accurate diagnosis and treatment is essential to successful care and long-term outcomes. A multimodal approach is essential to the best care of children with epilepsy, including electrodiagnostics, high resolution imaging, and both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments. This talk reviews the basic elements of diagnosis and treatment in modern epilepsy care.

    Dr. McAllister presents an overview of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, Cutaneous and Systemic Mastocytosis, and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections  (PANDAS).  These rare" pediatric illnesses, actually occur with more frequency than once thought.  She discusses variability in clinical presentation for these conditions, diagnostic algorithms, and integrative approaches to treatment.  Dr. McAllister has successfully treated these conditions in her practice and shares her experiences and which treatment modalities and strategies have proven most effective and safe.

  • Triage of Pediatric Eye Disease and Disorders

    This course covers common and not-so-common eye disorders of childhood, from refractive error, strabismus and amblyopia. Pediatric eye diseases, including congenital cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, and nystagmus are also included. Pharmaceutical treatment, especially topical atropine for amblyopia,  glaucoma medications including prostaglandin analogs like latanoprost, and multi-purpose oral medications like acetazolamide are discussed.  Emphasis will be placed on triage for the primary care provider.
