  • Cervical Dysplasia, Human Papillomavirus and Naturopathic Medicine

    Original Date: March 16, 2013
Presenter: Kimberly Windstar, MEd, ND & Lisa Taulbee, ND

1.5 general CEUs for NDs approved by OBNM

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) plays a significant role in the progression of genital mucosal cell changes to various levels of dysplasia and carcinogenesis. Cofactors must also be present in order for these abnormal changes to occur by supporting HPV persistence. Pap smears, HPV DNA testing and colposcopy determine the diagnosis and the treatment options for each case. Naturopathic medicine has a great deal to offer in the treatment and management of cervical dysplasia including lifestyle recommendations, diet, botanical and nutraceutical supplements, homeopathic remedies, and in some cases the local application of escharotic treatment. In the case that excisional procedures are recommended or a woman choses a conventional local treatment option all of the previous naturopathic treatments are still able to be employed. Two cases are presented to illustrate the use and success of naturopathic treatment for cervical dysplasia and HPV.
